Why equipment names matter
Explain why voltage alone does not identify an equipment class or a technician's experience.
The word gear is useful in casual conversation, but it is not a complete equipment description. A wall-mounted panelboard, a service switchboard, low-voltage power circuit breaker switchgear, and a medium-voltage metal-clad lineup can all distribute power while presenting very different construction, maintenance, protection, and testing scopes.
A reliable identification starts with the assembly nameplate and applicable product standard. Then confirm nominal and maximum voltage, continuous current, short-circuit ratings, enclosure type, main device, mounting method, access, compartment construction, and the actual purpose of the lineup.

+Voltage is one clue, not the whole answer
Equipment at similar operating voltages can belong to different product classes. A 480 V switchboard and 480 V low-voltage switchgear may use different assemblies, breaker families, withstand capabilities, access, and field procedures.
+The standard anchors the classification
UL 67, UL 891, UL 845, UL 1558, and the IEEE C37.20 series describe different equipment families. Current nameplate information and manufacturer literature carry more weight than a nickname used on site.
+Construction predicts field scope
Compartmentalization, drawout elements, insulated bus, shutters, interlocks, control power, and instrument transformers create inspection and testing tasks that do not exist on a basic branch-circuit panel.

Loadcenters and panelboards
Recognize branch-distribution equipment without overstating it as switchgear experience.
UL 67 covers panelboards used for control and protection of electrical circuits. These assemblies commonly distribute branch circuits through plug-in or bolt-on molded-case breakers and are typically worked from the front. Loadcenter is a familiar market term for a common panelboard form, not a rung that establishes power-switchgear experience.
Field work may include visual and mechanical inspection, cleaning under an approved condition, connection checks, insulation-resistance testing when appropriate, breaker exercise, trip testing where required, grounding checks, and infrared inspection while energized under an approved program. The exact scope comes from the equipment, specification, manufacturer, and current testing standard.

+Branch distribution is the core function
Panelboards subdivide feeders into branch circuits and place circuit overcurrent devices in a common cabinet. Their system role differs from a lineup built around large feeder power circuit breakers.
+Front access affects the work
A compact cabinet may put bus and terminations near the working side. Access limitations, covers, and exposure are part of the job plan, not a reason to improvise.
+Small equipment still needs precise records
Record the panel designation, voltage, main rating, breaker identifiers, circuit references, enclosure type, condition, and any finding. A smaller asset does not justify vague documentation.

Switchboards
Distinguish a UL 891 switchboard from a panelboard and from low-voltage power circuit breaker switchgear.
UL 891 applies to dead-front switchboards rated 1000 V or less. Switchboards are commonly floor-mounted assemblies used at service entrances or major distribution points. They can contain switches, molded-case breakers, insulated-case breakers, metering, and other devices, but their exact construction varies widely.
Do not identify a switchboard from size alone. Check the assembly marking, device types, access, short-circuit rating, and whether equipment has individual metal compartments. Some devices may be removable, but that detail by itself does not turn the complete assembly into UL 1558 switchgear.

+Dead-front describes guarded access
A dead-front assembly has no live parts normally exposed on the operating side. It does not mean the interior is safe to enter or that every section is compartmentalized.
+Device families can overlap
Molded-case and insulated-case breakers can appear in switchboards. The breaker label and assembly label must both be read because device type and assembly class answer different questions.
+Short-time rating is a classification clue
UL 891 switchboards are not covered as switchboards with short-time current ratings, while low-voltage power circuit breaker switchgear is built around a different product framework. Confirm the actual ratings rather than assuming selective coordination from appearance.

Low-voltage power circuit breaker switchgear
Identify the low-voltage member of the metal-enclosed power switchgear family.
UL 1558 and IEEE C37.20.1 cover metal-enclosed low-voltage power circuit breaker switchgear. The current IEEE scope includes stationary-mounted or drawout-mounted low-voltage power circuit breakers or definite-purpose switching devices in individual metal compartments. This is more precise than saying every low-voltage switchgear breaker must rack out.
The field scope can include breaker inspection, contact and pole resistance, trip-unit verification, control-circuit checks, compartment and bus inspection, interlock function, metering checks, and system function tests. Each task depends on the approved plan, equipment design, outage state, and technician qualification.

+Individual compartments change isolation
A breaker compartment can separate the device from adjacent sections, but the actual energized boundaries and access conditions still come from the lineup design and operating state.
+Drawout is common, not universal
Many low-voltage power circuit breakers move through connected, test, and disconnected positions. Current IEEE C37.20.1 also covers stationary-mounted devices, so use the nameplate and manufacturer design to classify the assembly.
+Assembly and breaker standards work together
The switchgear assembly and the installed breaker are separately evaluated products. Reading only the breaker model does not establish the construction or rating of the lineup around it.
